FAQ

To maximize the lifespan of a cartridge, always choose the clearest water. GeoPress® cartridges deliver ~350 cycles (250 liters / 65 gallons) while UltraPress® offer ~300 cycles (150 liters / 40 gallons). Water quality matters; avoid silt and sediment. Preemptively filter out silt and sediment with a handkerchief or t-shirt to extend the life of a cartridge.

The time it takes to press with your GeoPress® or UltraPress® will gradually increase over time. We recommend replacing the cartridge once the 'press time' reaches approximately 25 seconds (or three years have passed since the first use). Please note that colder water may require longer pressing time and does not necessarily mean the cartridge needs to be replaced.

An unused and airtight cartridge can be stored for up to 10 years. Once opened, use it for 3 years or until press time is ~25 seconds.

GeoPress® and UltraPress® cartridges filter and purify most freshwater sources. Avoid using them with salty or brackish water. When treating freshwater, start with the cleanest water available, such as streams and rivers.

Grayl's activated carbon effectively adsorbs many chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc. However, it is not designed for industrial disasters, coal ash spills, high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, high tannin concentrations, or water with toxic blue-green algae (e.g. cyanobacteria). Find another water source in those situations.

Grayl® cartridges contains non-woven ceramic fibers that have a high electropositive charge. These fibers effectively block and trap microorganisms and particulates, ensuring that submicron contaminants are removed through electroadsorption. Additionally, the cartridge is equipped with ultra-powdered activated carbon, which efficiently adsorbs chemicals, heavy metals, bad flavors, and odors.

To avoid contamination, use the Spout Cap. If dirty water comes in contact with the Inner Press, wash the Grayl (not the cartridge) with soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, dilute contaminants by pressing and agitating water through a GeoPress® or UltraPress® purifier bottle 5-7 times.

Proper maintenance for your GeoPress® or UltraPress® is crucial for optimal performance. After your adventures, ensure to follow these simple steps to keep your purifier in top shape. Start with a 'dry press' by pressing the wet purifier into the empty Outer Cup and disposing of excess water. Next, remove the cartridge and allow it to air-dry for 2-4 days. For the remaining components, hand wash them with warm, soapy water and let them air-dry. To maximize the lifespan of the cartridge, store the unit assembled. With proper care, the cartridge can last up to three years.

Yes, experience the hydration benefits of electrolyte-infused water in a UltraPress® or GeoPress® when equipped with a One-Way Electrolyte & Drink-Mix Valve (available since April 2023).

Always add electrolytes into the clean drinking water side. Avoid adding flavoring or electrolytes directly into a cartridge not equipped with a One-Way Drink Mix Valve, as it can diminish the cartridge's lifespan and efficacy. In those situations, pour the clean drinking water into another water vessel and then add electrolytes or flavorings.

Size, capacity and weight! Both models offer the highest level of protection from waterborne pathogens (99.99% of virus, 99.9999% of bacteria, and 99.9% of protozoan cysts, including Rotavirus, Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Cholera, Salmonella, Dysentery). They also filter many heavy metals, chemicals, and microplastics.

GeoPress® filters and purifies 24 oz of water, ideal for individuals and groups looking for a high capacity. UltraPress® purifies 16.9 oz and is great for individuals with limited space or when traveling with small pack side pockets.

An UltraPress® is constructed from: BPA-free polypropylene #5, food-grade silicone, TPE and ABS food-grade plastic. The country of origin for the UltraPress bottle is China. The country of origin for the cartridge is the United States.

Reviews

Loving it so far! Traveling

"Loving it so far! Traveling in parts of Eastern Europe where they say the water is ‘safe’ to drink but why chance it. The Grayl 16oz bottle is the perfect blend of ease of use coupled with small size. In less than ten seconds we can get fresh filtered water from virtually any source without fear of bacteria or other bad things. Very happy with my purchase!"

Jeff B. (5/5)

Perfect for travel!

"I travel for work and often find myself in hotels without access to clean, good tasting, bottled water. I don't trust the tap water many places I frequent, and those that do have sanitary water it often tastes horrible. Enter Grayl. It's the perfect solution to my dual safe and good tasting water problem. Very happy with my purchase and the 16. 9 oz size fits perfectly into my backpack!"

Chris J. (5/5)

Very hard to use

"I had to ask for help to pull the inner section out so that I could fill the outer shell with unfiltered water. Also it was difficult to push the inner section with the filter down, but at least that was doable and expected."

Teresa A. (2/5)

Perfect Size for traveling in unknown conditions

"We are traveling to remote locations in South Africa. As health concerns came to our forefront we purchased the 16. 9oz UltraPress® Purifier. It fits perfectly in our backpack and car drink holders. Easy to operate. Since speed was not a high priority the 10 seconds to push the inner bottle down with the filter into the outer bottle was not an issue."

Raj N. (5/5)

Great Travel Companion

"I used my UltraPress on a recent vacation in Colombia. It was reassuring to have the filtered water available at all times. And the water always tasted clean and with no funny flavors at all. It’s lightweight and easy to operate. One thing I wish it had is a connector from the cap to the lid. Too easy to drop the cap and potentially lose it."

Jane D. (5/5)

The GOAT

"This is by far the best water bottle ever made. I have struggled for years to find a water bottle for everyday life, that can filter out all the bad stuff. The ease and function of this bottle are second to none."

Noel W. (5/5)

GRAYL UltraPress

"The UktraPress' low volume footprint is ideal for day hikes, or backpcking where water supply wayer sources are plentifull, or as a supplement reservoir to refill other canteens/containers. The 16. 9 size fits cup holders, take up little space when slipped into a school or office bag, keeping drinking water always close at hand. . It is a useful and welcome addition for many occasions."

Wayne K. (5/5)

I am a bit of

"I am a bit of a water snob and I travel a lot for work. My habit when arriving at my destination was to buy a flat of water bottles - purified, not spring water. I would lug them up to my hotel room and use them all week. So it was a hassle, complete with microplastics. This bottle has changed all that! I can use water from any tap and make it taste good and have purity that I desire. Absolutely perfect!"

John P. (5/5)

Amazing

"I have used this on several hikes. I have done countless searches for THE best water filter for on the go. Grayl consistently is tested for being #1. I have used this when traveling too. Hotel sink water? No problem? Hiking river water? No problem. I will gladly pay extra for peace of mind for clean water. I have the 24 oz for hiking and Truck camping but just bought the smaller one for an international trip Im about to go on. Thanks Grayl!"

Tami R. (5/5)

Compact and perfect for exploring

"Great size for backpack. Ease of use in not carrying weighty bottles of water."

Lisa J. (5/5)

Q&A

I noticed the Grayl filters out a lot of things. Is there anything known to Grayl it doesn't filter out that I might find in well water, water in lakes, streams or rivers?
Thank you so much for reaching out and great question. The most notable contaminants that Grayl purifiers do NOT remove are salts/minerals, tannins, and cyanobacteria (toxins from blue/green algae). For more information, please feel free to reach out directly to our customer service team at info@grayl.com
I am traveling to Thailand. We will be staying in small hotels, but I understand the water is sketchy. Can I use this non-stop for three weeks? How long do you have to wait after pressing the water until you can drink it? If the clean water sits in the geo press overnight, is it still ok? Can contaminants leak back in?
Water is ready for drinking immediately after pressing. You can also drink it next day - after filtering, a Grayl functiond the same as any standard water bottle. Your Grayl will be perfectly functional for your three week trip. Just make sure to follow the cleaning and storage directions once you return.
I like REALLY cold water. Does the titanium version help keep the water cold?
No, none of our purifier bottles have any type of insulation type properties.
Are the old ultralight filters compatible with the current ultrapress?
Yes, and the same is true for the opposite. UltraPress replacement purifier cartridges are also compatible with the Ultralight.
What is the difference between the 16.9 oz Nature Edition versus the 16.9 oz Covert Edition?
The only difference between the two editions of the UltraPress are the colors available.
