FAQ

To maximize the lifespan of a cartridge, always choose the clearest water. GeoPress® cartridges deliver ~350 cycles (250 liters / 65 gallons) while UltraPress® offer ~300 cycles (150 liters / 40 gallons). Water quality matters; avoid silt and sediment. Preemptively filter out silt and sediment with a handkerchief or t-shirt to extend the life of a cartridge.

The time it takes to press with your GeoPress® or UltraPress® will gradually increase over time. We recommend replacing the cartridge once the 'press time' reaches approximately 25 seconds (or three years have passed since the first use). Please note that colder water may require longer pressing time and does not necessarily mean the cartridge needs to be replaced.

An unused and airtight cartridge can be stored for up to 10 years. Once opened, use it for 3 years or until press time is ~25 seconds.

GeoPress® and UltraPress® cartridges filter and purify most freshwater sources. Avoid using them with salty or brackish water. When treating freshwater, start with the cleanest water available, such as streams and rivers.

Grayl's activated carbon effectively adsorbs many chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc. However, it is not designed for industrial disasters, coal ash spills, high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, high tannin concentrations, or water with toxic blue-green algae (e.g. cyanobacteria). Find another water source in those situations.

Grayl cartridges are designed to remove low levels of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc., but are NOT designed to protect against industrial disasters, coal ash spills, very high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, high tannin concentrations or water that contains toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). In these conditions, it is very important to find another water source.

Grayl® cartridges contains non-woven ceramic fibers that have a high electropositive charge. These fibers effectively block and trap microorganisms and particulates, ensuring that submicron contaminants are removed through electroadsorption. Additionally, the cartridge is equipped with ultra-powdered activated carbon, which efficiently adsorbs chemicals, heavy metals, bad flavors, and odors.

To avoid contamination, use the Spout Cap. If dirty water comes in contact with the Inner Press, wash the Grayl (not the cartridge) with soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, dilute contaminants by pressing and agitating water through a GeoPress® or UltraPress® purifier bottle 5-7 times.

Proper maintenance for your GeoPress® or UltraPress® is crucial for optimal performance. After your adventures, ensure to follow these simple steps to keep your purifier in top shape. Start with a 'dry press' by pressing the wet purifier into the empty Outer Cup and disposing of excess water. Next, remove the cartridge and allow it to air-dry for 2-4 days. For the remaining components, hand wash them with warm, soapy water and let them air-dry. To maximize the lifespan of the cartridge, store the unit assembled. With proper care, the cartridge can last up to three years.

Yes, experience the hydration benefits of electrolyte-infused water in a UltraPress® or GeoPress® when equipped with a One-Way Electrolyte & Drink-Mix Valve (available since April 2023).

Always add electrolytes into the clean drinking water side. Avoid adding flavoring or electrolytes directly into a cartridge not equipped with a One-Way Drink Mix Valve, as it can diminish the cartridge's lifespan and efficacy. In those situations, pour the clean drinking water into another water vessel and then add electrolytes or flavorings.

Size, capacity and weight! Both models offer the highest level of protection from waterborne pathogens (99.99% of virus, 99.9999% of bacteria, and 99.9% of protozoan cysts, including Rotavirus, Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Cholera, Salmonella, Dysentery). They also filter many heavy metals, chemicals, and microplastics.

GeoPress® filters and purifies 24 oz of water, ideal for individuals and groups looking for a high capacity. UltraPress® purifies 16.9 oz and is great for individuals with limited space or when traveling with small pack side pockets.

A GeoPress® is constructed from: BPA-free polypropylene #5, food-grade silicone, TPE and ABS food-grade plastic. The country of origin for the GeoPress bottle is Vietnam or China. The country of origin for the cartridge is the United States.

Reviews

I typically write my reviews

"I typically write my reviews based on reward systems from manufactures/sellers. However, I decided to go forward and write a short one on this cup. Overall, the cup is fairly nice. Some mild taste to the water, but not terrible like others I have tried. I really like the one way valve that comes with this item. I do wish I would have spent the little extra and got the new version so I could boil some water in it. I think that cup would be a great cup to review. The instructions are relatively easy. Fill the cup, apply steady consistent pressure, and then you have a small cup of filtered water afterwards. The green color I ordered, I really like. It has blended in with the rest of my gear and has found a home on the bag for the time being. The cup is a little pricey for what it is, but so far it has good results. I hope to one day try the titanium version."

quick bait and switch

"So as I was checking out the total said $76. 38 so I proceeded to push the ok to buy I got 2 notice from my credit card company say charged for $76. 38 then another one of $78. 16 so I look on my statement and it says Grayl charged me twice and then refund me the $76. 38 but charged me the higher price of $78. 16. so why the bait and switch? say one thing do the other?"

Pressing down and pulling out to refill!!!

"Pressing down and pulling out to refill. It can be tough, requiring a little extra strength pulling out, pressing down not too bad. But when pulling out to refill, can be strong 💪 to pull out. I mean great product and concept. But I wouldn’t buy again, sorry. Do to being hard to pull out to refill."

Stanley R. (2/5)

Too tight, but works well!!

"The bottle itself is built very well, and the filtered water tastes good, mostly flat, but slightly mineralized depending on where you live. My only issue is that it’s very hard to pull the filter out after drinking the filtered water because of the vacuum effect and the tight gaskets. Technically, those components are doing their job well by preventing leaks, but I wish the designers had included a release mechanism to improve the overall user experience."

Sthitapragna E. (2/5)

Good product

"Geopress is as described. Very good quality. The instructions were easy to follow. Have been using it for the past five days. Water taste better after filtering through Geopress. Would buy another one. Would give it as a gift as well."

James F. (5/5)

I bought two because we’re

"I bought two because we’re visiting India, Nepal, and four other countries in that region. I can’t afford to get sick on this trip, especially with my 9-year-old. So I researched water purification options and found Grayl. I’m trusting that it works. So far I’ve pressed about 10 times. To test it, I tried filtering the milky water left after washing rice. To my surprise, it came out clear. But my next press was a challenge. After filtering that milky water once, the filter seemed shot. I’ve ordered another filter for the trip. Lesson learned: only use clear water. I’ll post a full review after 5 weeks of traveling."

dawa s. (4/5)

BEST FILTER EVER

"My son and I spent a week backpacking on Isle Royale National Park in 95 degree weather so we gave our Grayl GeoPresses a pretty good workout. I also had a Sawyer mini but it never made it out of my pack. Eight seconds for each press and we had all the fresh water we needed. Other people saw what we had and they couldn't wait to get home to upgrade to Grayl. One filter lasted all week, all under 10 seconds for each press. Love my Grayl."

Warren B. (5/5)

Exactly What I Hoped It Would Be!

"The difference in our tap water at home alone was shocking. We travel a fair amount over seas and knowing that we can have safe water to drink is a true bonus. As a hiker who fly fishes a lot, being able to grab water on the go without is everything."

Rich H. (5/5)

Game Changer

"Ordered the 24oz Geopress to have with me on the water while fly fishing. I've tried several different types of purifiers and while they work nothing is as convenient as the Geopress. It's worth every penny"

Lucas L. (5/5)

Hard for wife to use

"Bought for wife. She really struggles to pull apart. She has watched videos, reviewed instructions multiple times, tried lubrication and still struggles. I have to pull apart most of the time."

Bill H. (4/5)

Q&A

Is it possible to buy the new outer cup with the bevel by itself?
Yes, we have a full assortment of replacement components available on our website.
What’s the difference between nature and covert?
Thank you so much for reaching out. Nature and Covert are just collections of different colors.
I feel like I already know the answer but… I have a geopress and I thought the filter was dry so I reassembled the bottle. 1 year later (today) I pulled the cartridge out and it’s still damp. Do I need to replace it? If I filter a a bunch will it clean the filter or do you think bacteria has grown?
Thank you for reaching out. Because the filter was stored damp for such an extended period of time, you will need to replace it before continuing to use your Grayl.
Will it filter sulfate out of water?
At this time we currently do not have any testing data related to the removal of sulfate.
Does the GeoPress come with a filter/purifier cartridge, or is that sold separately?
Every Grayl purifier bottle comes standard with a purifier cartridge preinstalled.
