How long does a Grayl® filter & purifier cartridge last?

To maximize the lifespan of a cartridge, always choose the clearest water. GeoPress® cartridges deliver ~350 cycles (250 liters / 65 gallons) while UltraPress® offer ~300 cycles (150 liters / 40 gallons). Water quality matters; avoid silt and sediment. Preemptively filter out silt and sediment with a handkerchief or t-shirt to extend the life of a cartridge.

How do I know when it is time for a new cartridge?

The time it takes to press with your GeoPress® or UltraPress® will gradually increase over time. We recommend replacing the cartridge once the 'press time' reaches approximately 25 seconds (or three years have passed since the first use). Please note that colder water may require longer pressing time and does not necessarily mean the cartridge needs to be replaced.

What is the shelf life of a cartridge?

An unused and airtight cartridge can be stored for up to 10 years. Once opened, use it for 3 years or until press time is ~25 seconds.

What type of water does a Grayl® filter and purify?

GeoPress® and UltraPress® cartridges filter and purify most freshwater sources. Avoid using them with salty or brackish water. When treating freshwater, start with the cleanest water available, such as streams and rivers. Grayl's activated carbon effectively adsorbs many chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc. However, it is not designed for industrial disasters, coal ash spills, high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, high tannin concentrations, or water with toxic blue-green algae (e.g. cyanobacteria). Find another water source in those situations.

How does Grayl® filter and purify water?

Grayl® cartridges contains non-woven ceramic fibers that have a high electropositive charge. These fibers effectively block and trap microorganisms and particulates, ensuring that submicron contaminants are removed through electroadsorption. Additionally, the cartridge is equipped with ultra-powdered activated carbon, which efficiently adsorbs chemicals, heavy metals, bad flavors, and odors.

How do I avoid cross contamination?

To avoid contamination, use the Spout Cap. If dirty water comes in contact with the Inner Press, wash the Grayl (not the cartridge) with soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, dilute contaminants by pressing and agitating water through a GeoPress® or UltraPress® purifier bottle 5-7 times.

How do I clean and store my Grayl®?

Proper maintenance for your GeoPress® or UltraPress® is crucial for optimal performance. After your adventures, ensure to follow these simple steps to keep your purifier in top shape. Start with a 'dry press' by pressing the wet purifier into the empty Outer Cup and disposing of excess water. Next, remove the cartridge and allow it to air-dry for 2-4 days. For the remaining components, hand wash them with warm, soapy water and let them air-dry. To maximize the lifespan of the cartridge, store the unit assembled. With proper care, the cartridge can last up to three years.

Can I add electrolytes or other flavoring into a Grayl® after filtering and purifying?

Yes, experience the hydration benefits of electrolyte-infused water in a UltraPress® or GeoPress® when equipped with a One-Way Electrolyte & Drink-Mix Valve (available since April 2023). Always add electrolytes into the clean drinking water side. Avoid adding flavoring or electrolytes directly into a cartridge not equipped with a One-Way Drink Mix Valve, as it can diminish the cartridge's lifespan and efficacy. In those situations, pour the clean drinking water into another water vessel and then add electrolytes or flavorings.

What is the difference between the UltraPress® and the GeoPress®?

Size, capacity and weight! Both models offer the highest level of protection from waterborne pathogens (99.99% of virus, 99.9999% of bacteria, and 99.9% of protozoan cysts, including Rotavirus, Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Cholera, Salmonella, Dysentery). They also filter many heavy metals, chemicals, and microplastics. GeoPress® filters and purifies 24 oz of water, ideal for individuals and groups looking for a high capacity. UltraPress® purifies 16.9 oz and is great for individuals with limited space or when traveling with small pack side pockets.

What materials are Grayl® filter & purifier bottles made from? And where is the country of origin?

An UltraPress® is constructed from: BPA-free polypropylene #5, food-grade silicone, TPE and ABS food-grade plastic. The country of origin for the UltraPress bottle is China. The country of origin for the cartridge is the United States.

Works well - Should've gotten the bigger size

"My first use of this product came during a city wide boil advisory. Because the Grayl bottles are both a filter and a purifier, it was incredibly useful to quickly and safely have drinkable water. This outage lasted for two days, and showed me the weakness of the UltraPress. 16oz is a small volume of water when you are using it for everything (drinking, brushing teeth, cooking, making formula, etc...). The smaller size is more packable and easier to carry, but you go through the water so quickly. Whether you are camping or at home during an emergency, you will want to use purified water for everything. And in those situations, more is better. I think this is such a good product that I am ordering the GeoPress to have both a large and small bottle going forward."

Great bottle – looks and feels premium

"I’m really enjoying the 500ml UltraPress® Purifier. I really like the way it looks and feels, and personally I don’t see the size or feel of the bottle as a negative. Some other reviews i saw before buying said this as a con, but I actually think it feels like a normal water bottle. The 500ml capacity is also perfect for me. Again, I’ve seen other reviews mention that it doesn’t hold enough water, but if you think 500ml isn’t enough, I’d simply recommend going for the larger size. Overall, I’m very happy with it and would definitely recommend it."

Ultra press

"Great product, needs captivation forthe cap to prevent loss. Something like on the larger presses"

Constant Companion

"This bottle takes cheap plastic water bottles, tap fountains at the jobsite, or stale liquid from old WW2 buildings and makes it into a no-brainer. I never have to worry, I just attach it to my backpack and go about my day. The only thing I would do to take this review down a notch, though not worth a star. Is that the cap does not have an attachment for retainment. My bigger Grayl does come like that, I considered 3D printing something for my needs. All it needs is an attachment point for some paracord."

— Nikholas T. (5/5)

great purifier with one huge design flaw

"Note: I also have a Geopress and love it. However, I took off one star due to the Ultrapress not having some sort of retention strap for the twist off cap the way the Geopress does - you lose the cap in the woods, and you are out of luck. Drop the cap in the river when you’re scooping up water - out of luck. Now, to be fair, Grayl does say to only ‘crack’ the cap open when pressing, but you do need to take it off when drinking water…. add a way to prevent loss, and this purifier is 5 stars. Or retroactively create one for past purchasers, also a 5 star. But since staying hydrated is important when living off grid, on a remote hike/camp, etc. , I’d say its crucial to make sure the cap doesn’t fall and get lost, and Grayl puts that responsibility on the owner. If you stop on a narrow trail, or a not-so-level spot, for a drink, or for a short lunch/snack, you need to use two hands - one to drink from the Ultrapress, and the second one to hold the cap. Drop it because you lost momentary balance? Set it down so you can have a snack in your other hand and the wind blows it down a rocky surface?"

— Nick K. (5/5)

Very handy

"Very handy bottle. I wish the cap was connected to the lid like the 24oz bottle but other than that good quality."

— Caleb Q. (4/5)

I’m not a gorilla

"I have tried and tried and I simply do not have the arm strength to use this product. Unfortunately, I’ll have to return it."

Bottle Leaks after One Use

"I had previously used the bottle on a trip and it worked well, however on my 2nd trip I noticed the water was leaking out from the side instead of getting pushed through the filter. Tried contacting customer service since they promised a '10 year warranty' but it was alot of back and forth without actually solving the problem."
