To maximize the lifespan of a cartridge, always choose the clearest water. GeoPress® cartridges deliver ~350 cycles (250 liters / 65 gallons) while UltraPress® offer ~300 cycles (150 liters / 40 gallons). Water quality matters; avoid silt and sediment. Preemptively filter out silt and sediment with a handkerchief or t-shirt to extend the life of a cartridge.
The time it takes to press with your GeoPress® or UltraPress® will gradually increase over time. We recommend replacing the cartridge once the 'press time' reaches approximately 25 seconds (or three years have passed since the first use). Please note that colder water may require longer pressing time and does not necessarily mean the cartridge needs to be replaced.
An unused and airtight cartridge can be stored for up to 10 years. Once opened, use it for 3 years or until press time is ~25 seconds.
GeoPress® and UltraPress® cartridges filter and purify most freshwater sources. Avoid using them with salty or brackish water. When treating freshwater, start with the cleanest water available, such as streams and rivers.
Grayl's activated carbon effectively adsorbs many chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc. However, it is not designed for industrial disasters, coal ash spills, high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, high tannin concentrations, or water with toxic blue-green algae (e.g. cyanobacteria). Find another water source in those situations.
Grayl cartridges are designed to remove low levels of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc., but are NOT designed to protect against industrial disasters, coal ash spills, very high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, high tannin concentrations or water that contains toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). In these conditions, it is very important to find another water source.
Grayl® cartridges contains non-woven ceramic fibers that have a high electropositive charge. These fibers effectively block and trap microorganisms and particulates, ensuring that submicron contaminants are removed through electroadsorption. Additionally, the cartridge is equipped with ultra-powdered activated carbon, which efficiently adsorbs chemicals, heavy metals, bad flavors, and odors.
To avoid contamination, use the Spout Cap. If dirty water comes in contact with the Inner Press, wash the Grayl (not the cartridge) with soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, dilute contaminants by pressing and agitating water through a GeoPress® or UltraPress® purifier bottle 5-7 times.
Proper maintenance for your GeoPress® or UltraPress® is crucial for optimal performance. After your adventures, ensure to follow these simple steps to keep your purifier in top shape. Start with a 'dry press' by pressing the wet purifier into the empty Outer Cup and disposing of excess water. Next, remove the cartridge and allow it to air-dry for 2-4 days. For the remaining components, hand wash them with warm, soapy water and let them air-dry. To maximize the lifespan of the cartridge, store the unit assembled. With proper care, the cartridge can last up to three years.
Yes, experience the hydration benefits of electrolyte-infused water in a UltraPress® or GeoPress® when equipped with a One-Way Electrolyte & Drink-Mix Valve (available since April 2023).
Always add electrolytes into the clean drinking water side. Avoid adding flavoring or electrolytes directly into a cartridge not equipped with a One-Way Drink Mix Valve, as it can diminish the cartridge's lifespan and efficacy. In those situations, pour the clean drinking water into another water vessel and then add electrolytes or flavorings.

"I’m a world traveler (not a backpacker) and have been hoarding plastic bottles to get safe water till now. This is a game changer for me, never again will I need a plastic bottle! It even solves the problem of water for my coffee that others don’t. I wish I would have discovered this sooner. If you are looking for an easy to use filter master for your questionable worldly water, this is it! Need water to make some coffee in the hotel kettle, this is it! The 24oz is a bit of a bag space hog so I’ll get the smaller one that will do the job just as well. Highly recommend!"
"I got the 24oz covert model. It looks great wiith excellent build quality. We have a well at home and I donate plasma every week. Its essential to drink a lot of water....I press and take the bottle every time I go. The water definately tastes better....even after Ive boiled it i press with the grayl and it tastes better. Its strong, easy to use and clean, and now my wife wants one. couldnt recommend it enough"
"I haven’t left the USA to use my bottle in Colombia. However, I have begun to use it around the house. Feeling how to hard to push it through and the weight to carry it around. I have watched YouTube from owners and I am excited to use it where the water could be damaging to us, Americans!"
"These are the best filters on the market, hands down. I have one for myself, my wife and my kid. Great for everyday hikes or to put in an emergency bag. The Covert is great to have as a low profile water bottle out in the wild. Since these bottles are getting more and more popular, I like to keep mine as inconspicuous as I can."
"So far, I’m really liking my GRAYL. I took it on a camping trip, and the water tasted good. It costs a little more than the Epic Water Filters bottles I’ve used for the past four or five years, but I like the construction and the press design. My Epic bottles worked well, including at military facilities where I prefer to filter my drinking water. My biggest complaint was the effort needed to draw water through the filter attached to the straw. With the GRAYL, once you’ve pressed the water, you can drink freely from the open spout. That’s probably my favorite feature—you can take a good drink without having to work for it. The pressing process takes a little getting used to, but I really like the concept. I’ll be carrying it around a military facility for the next three days, too. Still early in my ownership, but my first impressions are very positive."
"We are frequent RV travelers. Never know what's coming out of those spigots. We double filter the potable water, but dont trust dubious sources for drinking. Also got tired of purchasing bottled water."
"I bought for a trip. Wow heavy. Good thing I don't have to carry a lot. Would never use backpacking. Why no 30+ oz... Probably because it would be 3 lbs. But it would be delightful if titanium was plastic inside so it was lighter than the full plastic one. Overall a bottle to do what I need. Will only use for a couple weeks so expensive for that but want to stay healthy when drinking water."
"My Geopress, is a fantastic piece of kit that I use daily replacing the need for disposable plastic bottles of water. I use my Geopress exclusively in my travel from Colombia to the United States and everywhere in between. Most recently the Geopress provided safe drinking for me and my family in the most devastating areas of Colombia affected by the 7. 4 earthquake. Our friends were so impressed we actually bought them 2 complete sets of Geopress 24oz bottles with additional filters to use on their finca."
"This bottle is great for peace of mind while traveling, not just hiking. If you drink lots of water and hate wasting or lugging around water bottles while traveling this should be your go to solution. Im buying a second one already as my girlfriend stole my first one. My only comment would be for people with a weak grip strength removing the external sleeve to fill with water could be a bit difficult but for most people the grippy material on it is sufficient."
"I haven’t used it yet, but the fact that it purifies water and not just filters it is fantastic, especially because there are no mechanical parts to break or batteries to operate. I’m looking forward to my first use of it."
